Taba Trips: Petra Tour from Taba by ferry, trip to Petra, The red rose rock city of the Nabateans, the lost city, riding horse to the Siq, the Roman Theatre and Royal Tombs.

Pro Tours REP will pick you up from your hotel in Taba by modern air-conditioned bus to drive to Taba Port Marina. Transfer by boat/Ferry to Aqaba. Arrival to the Tala Bay yacht Club where you will be met by our Representatives in Aqaba and assisted with all arrival formalities. After that, the group will be transferred by modern coach to Petra to start a full day tour of city. Once the ancient Nabatean capital, this city has a lot to tell. The visit starts at the visitor’s center, where each person is assigned a Bedouin guided horse for the journey to the entrance of the lost city. After passing some tombs which are located outside the city, the visitor passes through the SIQ, an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone. It is a winding, one-kilometer-long fissure between overhanging cliffs that seem to meet more than 300 feet overhead.

Near the end of the passage, the SIQ, with great style, makes one last turn and out of the gloom in towering brightness appears Petra’s most impressive monument, El Khazneh – The Treasury. This is one of the most elegant remains of antiquity, carved out of the solid rock from the side of the mountain, is nearly 140 feet high and 90 feet wide.

Beyond el Khazneh the visitor is surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra’s carved and built structures, soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a carved Roman theater, large and small houses, burial chambers and much more. The Victorian traveler and poet, Dean Burgon, gave Petra a description which holds to this day – “Match me such a marvel save in Eastern clime, a rose-red city half as old as time.” After that, transfer back to Aqaba for departure from Tala Bay Yacht Club with full assistance in departure formalities. Transfer to your hotel in Taba.

Wadi Rum desert is a protected area covering 720 kilometer square of desert wilderness located in the south of Jordan. High mountains of sandstone and granite appear from wide sandy valleys. Canyons and narrow fissures cut deep into the mountains, etched by Bedouins over ages. Many Bedouin tribes live among the mountains of Wadi Rum and the goat-hair tents are the main feature of the landscape of the valley.

How to explore and visit Wadi Rum, including jeep, camel and hiking tours and you can stay overnight in a Bedouin tent under the stars away from the city noise.

Exploring Wadi Rum

You can visit Wadi Rum by several ways: by camel, by jeep, by horse or even on foot.

Jeep tours are the quickest way to see the well-known scenic and archaeological sites. There are 19 of these sites of interest, and it is possible to visit any combination in a single tour. Tours start from the visitor centre, where you can choose one of 9 tour packages, lasting from 2 hours to full day. Longer trips can be arranged. Most vehicles are pick-up trucks operated by local Bedouin cooperatives. Private 4 x 4 vehicles and tour company fleet-vehicles can enter Rum provided they follow all regulations.

Camel rides are a popular activity and short trips can be arranged on demand from the visitor centre. There are also 9 tour packages visiting the main sites of interest, which last between 1hr to full day. Overnight trips and long treks are possible on request. A small number of operators offer pre-booked horseback tours.

Hiking is possible throughout the protected area, but maps and details are still difficult to find. Bedouin guides can be arranged if pre-booked and there are two “easy” trails leading from the visitor center, one short and one long, promoted by the Protected Area Management. See also the library for references on trails and climbing routes.

The People in Wadi Rum

Virtually all the people living in and around Wadi Rum are of Bedouin origin and, until recently, led nomadic lives, relying on their goat herds. They belong to seven tribal groups, of which the three largest are the Zalabia tribe who make up the majority of people living in Rum Village (see Rum map); as Rum village is the only village inside the protected area; the Zalabia tribe is largely responsible for tourism services and operate many of the jeep and camel tours. These services are organized through the Rum Tourism Cooperative, a locally run society that shares the tourism business between the villagers. Even though, most local Bedouin has become villagers, they still maintain goat herds for milk, meat and ‘jameed’, a type of yoghurt. For parts of the year, some families or family members return to a wandering existence with their flocks. Few, however, are able to continue a truly nomadic existence today, and the traditional Bedouin lifestyle is fast disappearing.

Protecting Wadi Rum
We need the help of all visitors to protect Wadi Rum successfully.

Wadi Rum is a very beautiful and special place but it faces some challenging environmental problems. The growing pressure from visitors, and especially from off-road vehicles, is damaging the fragile desert ecology. There is also a problem of littering and the loss of wildlife through illegal hunting.

A major conservation program is underway to tackle these problems, including zoning schemes, organized vehicle routes, better tourist information and the creation of a team of conservation rangers to patrol the area. At the same time, we need the help of all visitors to make our efforts to protect Wadi Rum successful. If you are planning to visit this unique protected area, please follow the rules and regulations and do all you can to respect the site and it’s people
